Trims and equipment: Trim-wise, Vogue is the starting point. This entry-level trim gets plenty of kit, including a heated windscreen, folding door mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, metallic paint, 20in alloy wheels, leather seats, cruise control and a in twin-screen infotainment set-up.
Next up, Vogue SE adds more driver assistance tech, heated and cooled semi-aniline leather seats, soft-close doors, 21in split-spoke wheels, a more advanced terrain response system and a W surround-sound system (the standard car gets a more humble W set-up).
At the top end of the line-up, Autobiography cars get more lavish materials inside, a massage function on the front seats, executive-class rear seats, a sliding panoramic roof, further driver assistance features and more powerful ‘pixel’ LED headlights.
The SVAutobiography model, meanwhile, gets everything on the options list thrown at it; it features a W Meridian audio system, quilted leather semi-aniline seats, a rear seat refrigerator, mohair mats with leather bindings and deployable leather-trimmed tables.

It’s bigger than the old car, too, measuring 62mm longer, 55mm wider with a mm longer wheelbase. It’s this new wide-set stance, with short overhangs and a more steeply raked windscreen, which give the Sport its less boxy, contemporary look. Cynics will say it looks too much like an Evoque on growth hormones, but that’s hardly a bad thing.
Climb onboard and Land Rover has worked its interior magic once again. Every surface is covered in either stitched leather, chunks of metal or soft-touch rubber. A new small-diameter steering wheel feels and looks special in your hands, while the visibility from the elevated driving position is excellent. The rear seats are quite snug for such a large car, while an optional third row of seats (not fitted to our test car) rises electronically from the boot floor and is really only suitable for kids.

In the first instance, the Range Rover Sport's interior has more of a wow factor than many rivals. While the Audi Q8's cabin is extremely high quality, for example, it's also rather predictable. Even several years since its launch, the Range Rover Sport manages to impress thanks to its unusual colour combinations and high quality materials.
You sit higher in the Range Rover Sport than many rivals - although not as upright as the Range Rover itself. This provides a commanding view, putting you at eye level with Transit van drivers. The seats are superb, providing plenty of support and unlikely to cause any aches or pains even after many hours in the car.

In the olden days, when it was possible to make a few shillings from cultivating the land, farmers could afford two cars. They had a Land Rover, on which they could lean while gnawing on a pork pie. And perhaps a Humber for nights out at the Berni Inn.
