Dopo aver ricevuto una prima istruzione musicale dal padre, organista e maestro di scuola, a soli 9 anni, cioè prima dell'età consentita, supera il difficile esame di ammissione al Regio Conservatorio di Milano dove ha tra i suoi insegnanti Angeleri, Ray, Frasi, Mazzucato e Rossi e consegue il diploma nel con il massimo dei voti.

Successivamente, Amilcare Ponchielli, riceve incarico di Maestro Sostituto al Teatro Concordia di Cremona e diviene organista della Chiesa di Sant'Imerio.

Nel frattempo compone le sue prime opere grazie all'aiuto finanziario del sellaio Piatti.

Poiché i suoi primi esperimenti teatrali "I Promessi Sposi" del , "La Savoiarda" del e "Roderico, Re dei Goti" del , sono accolti dal pubblico con poco entusiasmo, Ponchielli si adatta a ricoprire il posto di direttore delle bande civiche delle città di Piacenza e di Cremona.

Milan, Jan. 15, He studied with his father, a shopkeeper and organist at the village church, and entered the Milan Cons. as a non-paying student when he was 9; his mentors included Pietro Ray (theory), Arturo Angeleri (piano), Felice Frasi (composition), and Alberto Mazzucato (music history, aesthetics, and composition). While a student there he collaborated on the operetta Il sindaco babbeo (Milan Cons., March ) and also wrote the sym. Scena campestre (). After his graduation (), he went to Cremona as a church organist. He was named assistant to Ruggero Manna, director of Cremona’s Teatro Concordia (), where he brought out his opera I promessi sposi (Aug. 30, ). He was conductor of the municipal bands in Piacenza (–64) and Cremona (from ), where he also conducted opera; continued to pursue his interest in composing for the theater.
