Some years ago I was invited to take away what books I chose from a deceased brother’s library. I selected a complete set of “The Bible Treasury” from to early in this century. A collector’s item indeed. Later I handed the volumes to a friend who happened to be a Kelly buff. He in turn showed them to a nephew visiting him from Holland who further appreciated their value. The nephew took them back with him to Europe where they were photographically reduced and printed on thin paper so that four years of publication could be condensed into one volume. The resulting small print became hopeless for this reader’s eyes. For over fifty years this magazine was edited by William Kelly. The bound volumes are now again procurable. In its day the “Bible Treasury” was appreciated by such reputable scholars as Dean Alford. An archdeacon referred to Mr. Kelly’s magazine as the only religious magazine worth reading. Most of Kelly’s expositions of the books of the Bible (it is claimed that he wrote on every book in the inspired canon) first appeared in serial form in the “Bible Treasury.” Fortunatel
William Carey was born on August 17, , the eldest of five children of Edmund and Elizabeth Carey, weavers by trade. The family, members of the Church of England, lived in Paulerspury in rural Northamptonshire, England.
At 14, Carey was apprenticed to a shoemaker, Clarke Nichols. Mostly self-educated, Carey had a gift for languages and taught himself Greek with the help of a local weaver named Thomas Jones, who possessed a classical education.
Carey was converted in his teens and was baptised by John Ryland Jr, a Baptist pastor. He joined a local association of Particular Baptists – the Northamptonshire Baptist Association where he became friends with Ryland, John Sutcliff and Andrew Fuller who were also young pastors. By , Carey had been invited to pastor a local Baptist church and in , he became the full-time pastor of Harvey Lane Baptist Church in Leicester.
Drawing inspiration from Jonathan Edwards’ Account of the Life of the Late Rev. David Brainerd and the journals of the explorer James Cook, Carey became concerned with propagating the gospel throughout the world.

William Kelly () was born into an Episcopalian family from
Ulster, Northern Ireland. As a young boy he was left fatherless. This
misfortune did not rob him of his buoyant sense of humor, but did spur
him to diligence in all areas of life. A hard worker and a vigorous
student, he graduated at the top of his class from Trinity College,
Dublin, where he studied classics.
At age 20, on the isle of Sark, he was shaken out of a religious
slumber by reading Revelation , "And I saw a great white
throne, and Him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the
heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the
dead, small and great, stand before God" Years later, Kelly
commented on the verses that God used to give him assurance of
salvation. "'For three are those that bear witness, the Spirit, and the
water and the blood, and the three agree in one'--three witnesses, but
for one united testimony. 'If we receive the witness of men, the
witness of God is greater.' (1 John ) May I recall the divine relief and
deliverance these words gave more than sixty years ago to a soul
converted but harassed and deeply exercised through a sens
