Clunie Reid
2 July–7 August
A new exhibition by the British artist Clunie Reid, the artist’s first large-scale solo presentation in a not-for-profit space in London.
For Studio Voltaire, Reid created a series of works that draw on sexual and banal content as well the rhetoric of advertising and popular magazines. Large sheets of aluminum were overlaid with crude drawings and text: photo-collage and assemblage interrupt the reflective surface of the metal.
Reid often uses a strong punk/DIY aesthetic, this is evident in the use of bricolage as it the attempts to take back control of visual culture. Celebrity culture, art theory, pornography, fashion and cartoon caricatures are spliced into visual jokes of both image and text. This regurgitation of references often questions the media from which they were created. With a certain amount of ambivalence, the work questions casual sexism and sexual politics within contemporary culture.
The exhibition followed Clunie Reid’s solo exhibitions at Focal Point Gallery, Southend (), MOT International, London ( and ) and Galerie Reinhard Hauff (). Reid has been included in numerous group exhibitions including Bielefelder Ku

Clunie Reid's contribution to Nought to Sixty
Clunie Reid (born Pembury, , lives in London) creates aggressive and rampant photo-collages that question the media they are created from, as well as the integrity of the source images which they employ. The artist uses deliberately cheap material, gaffer-taping her collages to the wall and emphasising the act of composition rather than the final product. In one group of works Reid takes photographs of her studio floor; in others airbrushed images of beautiful women are broken into fragments, scribbled over and adorned with slogans that resound with irony.
Reid's Beautiful () shows a majorette, her facial features pixelated. The original poster was found and photographed by the artist in Venice, already defaced with blue biro scribbled over the figure's eyes, nose and mouth. On her legs appear jagged scrawls of pubic hair. The dancer is superimposed over a postcard picture of a Venice sunset, and across the top of the image Reid has written 'beautiful' in childlike lettering. These are the clichés that form one idea of beauty: flat-chested girls in glittery tops performing arabesques, tourist sites at sunset with P
