Poet Biography

Sir Walter de la Mare was born at Charlton, Kent, in the south of England, of well-to-do parents. His father, James Edward Delamaere, was an official of the Bank of England. His mother, Lucy Sophia (Browning) Delamare, was related to the poet Robert Browning. He was educated in London at St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School, which he left at age From to he worked in London in the accounting department of the Anglo-American Oil Company. His career as a writer started from about and he continued to publish to the end of his life. His first published story, 'Kismet' (), appeared in the Sketch under the pseudonym Walter Ramal. In de la Mare was awarded a yearly government pension of £, and he devoted himself entirely to writing. He retired to Taplow in Buckinghamshire, where he lived with his wife, Constance Elfrida Ingpen, and four children. His son Richard became chairman of Faber & Faber, and published several of his father's books. In he became of of the legatees of his fellow poet Rupert Brooke. Walter John de la MareOMCH ( 25 April – 22 June ) was an English poet, short story writer, and novelist. He is probably best remembered for his works for children, for his poem "The Listeners", and for a highly acclaimed selection of subtle psychological horror stories, amongst them "Seaton's Aunt" and "All Hallows".

In , his novel Memoirs of a Midget won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, and his post-war Collected Stories for Children won the Carnegie Medal for British children's books.

Walter de la Mare

Walter de la Mare () was the prolific author of many volumes of poetry, short stories and novels, including one of the most enduringly popular poems in the English language, &#;The Listeners&#;. Born in Charlton, Kent, he was educated at St. Paul&#;s Cathedral Choir School in London. At sixteen he started work in the statistics department of Anglo-American Oil. He married in and had four children and for many years he struggled to balance the life of the writer with the financial demands of family until, in , he received a Civil List pension which enabled him to concentrate on writing. His first book, a collection of poems called Songs of Childhood appeared in the title gives us a clue to de la Mare&#;s key poetic concerns and establishes him in a tradition which stretches back to Blake&#;s Songs of Innocence and Experience and the ideals of the Romantics. Like them he had a privileged childhood, a time of unique vision uncontaminated by adult perceptions, and he remained throughout his career a keen and successful writer of poems for children.
