The Family Stone
To many, the Head of the Charles means international competition and tricky turns around Weld and Eliot Bridges. To the Stones, it means family.
Ever since Gregg Stone ’75 graduated from college, he and his classmates have had reunions at every Head of the Charles, a major holiday for those in the rowing world.
“The hosts [of the reunion] would give all the kids little toys,” Gevvie Stone says. “I remember the Head of the Charles being kind of like Christmas—a yearly event you could mark your calendar for.”
The Head of the Charles has also been a source of athletic pride for the Stone family, as Gregg and Lisa both won the singles event in and their daughter Gevvie took the title last fall. Gevvie will be looking to defend her title in the single, while her brother Robbie—a sophomore on the Harvard heavyweight crew—will be rowing in the sophomore eight.
Gregg Stone has long been a staple on the Charles River, having won both the national championship and the Head of the Charles single scull race. But Gregg’s greatest legacy may have emerged from his and his friends’ efforts to keep themselves rowing during law school by starting the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Club—which
Dr. Gevvie Stone Talks About Her Row To Tokyo
Kristina Wagner and Gevvie Stone compete during the Women’s Double Sculls at the Olympic Games Tokyo on July 23, in Tokyo, Japan.
TOKYO — After Gevvie Stone won an Olympic silver medal in single sculls at the Olympic Games Rio , many people thought she would retire. She had reached the Olympic podium. Why not go out on a high note?
She was about to start her residency in emergency medicine, too. And if she tried for a third Olympic Games in Tokyo, there was no guarantee she would make it. Injury always looms for athletes, and up-and-comers can derail dreams.
“There was no guarantee I'd make it to this team, never mind that Olympic final,” said Stone.
But the year-old doctor was not ready to stop competitive rowing. So when she was giving a talk at an elementary school, and the kids asked her why she had retired if, a) she was getting faster, and b) she still loved it, she decided to try for one more Games.
That decision changed her career path as a physician. And it landed her back on her third Olympic team, this time in the double sculls with Kristi Wagner.
The duo rowed to fifth in the double sculls

I'm trying to account for what makes elite women scullers so much faster on the water than male masters scullers in their 40s to 60s.dave wrote: It appears to me that male masters scullers in their 40s to 60s have 2K scores that, in general, are as fast or faster than most elite women scullers.
Here are some factors that contribute to sculling performance: size, strength/power, conditioning, & technique.
Now compare myself with Gevvie Stone. She is female Olympian, age 31, 6'0" tall, weighs lbs and won silver in Rio this summer in women's single sculls. I am male masters rower, age 62, 6'1" tall, weigh lbs and was third in men's open F (age ) single sculls at USRowing Masters Nationals this summer.
With regards to height, I have a slight advantage of 1 inch. With regard to weight, she has an advantage of about 17 pounds. I think these factors are so close they're probably negligible in terms of performance.
With regards to strength, I can only speculate. However, I do not think she can lift significantly more than me in the dead-lift or other power lifts. So I'm going to make the assumption that we are comparable.
I use the 2K erg test as a measure of co
