Power of images and their combinations. Therefore all kinds of diversions. As well in music, sounds or films. Playing with elements, to make it mine.
In Collage, I like to watch every picture as the point of departure for a story. Various duration, gathered in one. to evoke a fake history or inspire nostalgia for a period in time that never truly existed. Sometimes further to a decision. Mostly random. the obsession of collecting disparate images from books, old magazines and other found material becomes as much a part of the emerging image as the mark-making. A piece often becomes about the search and desire to combine those emergent narrative symbols that seem charged with a familiar yet distant emotion. When successful, all the elements fall together with irony and tension while all other realities are obliterated, leaving the viewer as participant inside the picture, with his own codes and connections. The image then carries the weight of a personal reality. Most important, the final image actually gains a significant evocative quality I could not have expressed in any other way.

I’m hypnotized by the meticulously spliced work created by Matthieu Bourel. While creating his captivating pieces, he listens to electronic music that he has composed alongside sound samples from his favorite movies. This pairing becomes relevant in the results of his creations. “When successful, all the elements fall together with irony and tension while all other realities are obliterated, leaving the viewer as a participant inside the picture, with his own codes and connections… The image then carries the weight of a personal reality.”
There is a certain magic here.
Pieces of dream sequences, a story with gaps only the viewer can connect. I make my connection, convinced that I’m a subject of a mind-control experiment. I trace memories of lives I have never lived and lives I have almost forgotten. I channel pain, emptiness, and curiosity. I become lost in a realm of something familiar yet dissonant.

Self-described as “data-ism”, the work of the French artist Matthieu Bourel is shaped by the core principles of photomontage and collage. He masterly combines traditional cut-and-paste collage techniques with digital editing, digital animation, and even sound design to create a body of work that blurs the borders between illustration, graphic design and art installation. For Bourel, creating these images is a way of responding to the visual overload that is constantly bombarding us.
Matthieu, it wouldn’t do justice to label you as a collage artist. Your body of work blurs the line between illustration, graphic design and even art installation. How would you describe yourself? And how did your career in art start?
Thank you for that. As I was feeling trapped in a style in the music scene before, there was no way to sit back and work within a specific genre with images today. I try to not feel the pressure that I have to be a collagist, this or that. ‘What you’re supposed to do’ and ‘what people expect you to do’ are cages. I like new fields, new directions; I don’t want to be chained to one thing.
