Everyone knows that art schools make the best bands. Without art academies there would be no Talking Heads, Pulp, or Eno. There would be no Beatles, GWAR, or DEVO (how about that for three unlikely peas in a pod?). Over the years the Icelandic Academy of Arts has produced its own crop of performers, influential on the national music scene. In the late s Bruni BB (an experimental noise outfit that became notorious for decapitating a chicken in the documentary Rokkí Reykjavík) stirred things up. Today, one of its members, Finnbogi Petursson, exhibits his sculptures and sound works internationally. The early s saw Íkarus, a punk band that eventually furnished The Sugarcubes with two of its members, take off. A little later that decade, Oxzmá brought a raft of theatricality to their psychobilly live sets. Closer to present, in the s, listeners experienced Sudden Weather Change. The group’s second LP is titled Sculpture: Not A Line But A Circle, wearing art school credentials on its album sleeve. Higher Atlas: The Marrakech Biennale in Context [4] brings together a collection of texts that dilates on the social and historical context, history, and contemporary reality of exhibition making in North Africa and in particular, Morocco. For Chan and Samman, the exhibition is the primary locus of artistic information; firsthand experience of the work is the best way to understand it. The catalogue, published in English and French, with an Arabic online edition to follow, is intended to provide a context for the exhibition within preexisting and future frameworks for understanding some of the considerations that went into this edition of the Marrakech Biennale.

BAW JOURNAL: Sie haben kürzlich bei den KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin Ihre Arbeit als Kurator Digitaler Raum begonnen. Wie sieht das Kuratieren im digitalen Raum aus? Und wie unterscheidet es sich von der Arbeit in einem ›konventionelleren‹ Ausstellungsraum?

NADIM JULIEN SAMMAN: Der digitale Raum steht nicht allein. Er umfasst das Leben im analogen oder ›realen‹ Raum. Denken Sie daran, wie eine bestimmte App zur Vermietung von Wohnungen die Struktur der Stadt verändert hat. Oder wie die Verbreitung von gezielter Werbung durch soziale Medien die demokratische Politik im Westen destabilisiert. Das heißt, die vernetzten Koordinaten dieses ›Raums‹ müssen nachgezeichnet werden, das ist eine Voraussetzung für gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Orientierung (im Gegensatz zu Hysterie). Wir hängen da alle mit drin—die Frage ist nur wie. Wir brauchen dringend kritische Perspektiven. Kunstinstitutionen, die sich mit der Macht der Bilder im gesellschaftlichen Leben auseinandersetzen, müssen ein Forum bieten für widerstreitende Darstellungsformen.
