Biography of Dominic de Guzman
Dominic de Guzmanwas born around in Caleruega, Spain, where his parents, noble Castilians, own many properties. From his childhood, Dominic was destined for church life and his parents entrusted his education to his uncle, an archpriest. In , he left to study theology in Palencia. Then, a great famine beset the country. Dominic, upset by the distress, sold all his books and gave the money to the poor, saying: "I don't want to study dead skin while men starve."
The prior of the city of Osma was looking for clerics ready to follow the Augustinian Rule that prelates must not be rich in possessions. He saw in Dominic a young man willing to follow this rule. Dominic therefore became a regular canon of Saint Augustine in Osma. He led a life of contemplative prayer. The life of a canon was, at the time, punctuated by daily singing, the common prayer of the hours, meditation and spiritual reading in private. In , he was ordained a priest. The reading of the Conferences of the Desert Fathers, the work of the Italian monk John Cassian, inspired Dominic greatly and raised him spiritually.

SAINT DOMINIC FOUNDER OF THE FRIARS PREACHERS, CONFESSOR
Feast: August 4
Dominic, founder of the great order of preaching friars which bears his name, was born in the year at Calaruega, Castile, Spain, of a noble family with illustrious connections. His father, Don Felix de Guzman, held the post of royal warden of the village; his mother, a woman of unusual sanctity, was to become Blessed Joan of Aza. Very early it was decided that Dominic should have a career in the Church. His call was so evident that while he was still a student, Martin de Bazan, bishop of Osma, appointed him canon of the cathedral, and the stipend he received helped him to continue his studies. Dominic's love of learning and his charity are both exemplified in a story of his student days. He had gathered a collection of religious books inscribed on parchment; these he greatly treasured, but one day he sold the whole lot that he might give the money thus obtained to some poor people. "I could not bear to prize dead skins," he said, "when living skins were starving and in need."

For a Christian to live one’s life entirely consumed by Christ, to be united with Him in prayer, to have the Name of Jesus always on one’s lips, might seem an impossible ideal. And yet, we know of great men and women throughout history who have lived up to that ideal more or less closely. One of these was Dominic Guzman, St Dominic, an exact contemporary of St Francis, who, like the Poor Man of Assisi, tried to conform his life to the model of Jesus Christ.

Dominic’s story begins in , with his birth in the small mountain village of Caleruega in Spain. Growing up in a pious family the young Dominic was steeped in the teachings of the Gospel. Perhaps inspired by the example of his uncle, who was a priest, a religious vocation seemed like a natural path for the young man. At age 24, Dominic was ordained, and soon became a Canon in the Cathedral of Osma. He was very close to the Bishop, Diego de Acebo, and at one point accompanied his Bishop on a diplomatic mission to Denmark. Returning from their mission by way of Rome, they aske
