Sandra Dee also known as Alexandra Zuck was an American actress. Sandra Dee began her career as a child model, working first in commercials, and film during her teenage years. She is best known for her portrayal of ingénues, Dee earned a Golden Globe Award as one of the year’s most promising newcomers for her performance in Robert Wise’s Until They Sail ().
Sandra Dee became a teenage star for her subsequent performances in Imitation of Life and Gidget (both ), which made her a household name. By the late s, her career had started to decline, and a highly publicized marriage to Bobby Darin (m. –) ended in divorce.
She rarely acted after this time, and her final years were marred by illness. She died in at age 62 of complications from kidney disease, brought on by a lifelong struggle with anorexia nervosa.

Biography
Actress, model. Born Alexandra Zuck, on April 23, (some sources say ), in Bayonne New Jersey. She was the only child of John and Mary Zuck, who divorced when Sandra was a toddler. She was raised solely by her mother until she re-married in Eugene Douvan, a New York real-estate entrepreneur, became Sandra�s stepfather. The young girl endured years of sexual abuse from her stepfather while she also suffered from anorexia. Both the abuse and her eating disorder would continue to haunt Sandra for the rest of her life.
Sandra took her stepfather�s name and the Douvan�s relocated from Long Island to Manhattan in She was enrolled in The Professional Children�s School, a school whose flexible curriculum was conducive to child performers. Sandra�s first modeling job was for Girl Scouts Magazine, which enabled her to eventually sign with a modeling agency. At the age of 12, the actress was discovered by producer Ross Hunter. Hunter launched her movie career and persuaded Universal Studios to sign the young actress to a seven-year contract. It was during this time that Sandra Douvan adopted the stage name Sandra Dee.

For example, her mother enrolled her in school early so she could have a head start. Sandy was only four years old when she entered the second grade. Sandra was an extremely pretty young lady, which enabled her to get into modeling. In fact, she was already very successful at her craft by the time she was 12 years old. This in turn led to television commercials for local companies, an added benefit for the young model.
Through her mother's prodding and the talent scouts, Sandra was signed to do a movie when she was 14 called Until They Sail (), released in While the film didn't exactly top the charts, it would lay the foundation for Sandra's career.
