Former Shelby County mayor discusses Martin Luther King Jr. assassination during book signing


 Former Shelby County Mayor Bill Morris held a book signing Thursday afternoon. 

The book, "Bill Morris: A Legendary Life," documents the life of Morris and his tenure as a sheriff with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department during the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his relationship with singer Elvis Presley. 

Morris is now retired from politics. He said the book spells out all of the challenges Memphis had in "redefining its role" as a city compared to other cities nationwide. 

Morris noted there was a time when he was sheriff where black deputies were not permitted to arrest white criminals — along with several other Jim Crow laws such as segregated bathrooms, schools and restaurants in Memphis. 

Morris said he was instrumental in changing department policy, allowing black officers to arrest white criminals. He also made a reference to the sanitation strike, noting that the city "suffered" during the time period of the strike.

During his time at University Martin Luther King became aware of the vast inequality and injustice faced by black Americans; in particular, he was influenced by Gandhi&#;s philosophy of non-violent protest. The philosophy of Gandhi tied in with the teachings of his Baptist faith. At the age of 24, King married Coretta Scott, a beautiful and talented young woman. After getting married, King became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
