Rating: 2 stars. Not scary, I found the story flawed, and the ending made me laugh instead of being scared.

Rating: 3 stars, a step up from the last short story. Definitely unsettling, but felt unsatisfied with the ending.

Rating: 4 stars. It was suspenseful but there were parts that didn’t make sense.

Rating: 2 stars. Eh. I didn’t find it interesting and the ending was nothing special.

Rating: 2 Stars. Well it had a good start, but I was so disappointed by that ending.

Rating: 3 Stars. I liked the eeriness of this story. The dual perspective was great, but I kinda wish the story was a little longer!

I became a writer because I love stories--all kinds of stories, but especially fantasy.
I can't remember a time before I wanted to be a writer.
My parents did a great job of convincing me I could do whatever I set my mind to.
I was born in and have lived almost my entire life in Rochester, New York.
I married Jim Vande Velde. (So, yes, Vivian Vande Velde is my real name.) When our daughter Beth was born, I quit my job as a secretary. Since I was home all day, I had to either take housework more seriously or come up with a good excuse why I couldn't. So this was the point where I had to stop saying "Someday I'm going to be a writer," and do something about it.
The first book I wrote was A Hidden Magic.
Writing turned out to be harder work than I thought it would be. (To read more about writing, go to the WRITING ADVICE page.)
But, once I finished writing the book, getting it published was even harder. I sent it out to 32 diffe
User Unfriendly
I recently found out that one of my childhood favorites, Heir Apparent, had a prequel of sorts written about a decade prior. User Unfriendly was in no way at the same level as Heir Apparent-it was a mere shade. This book had your typical medieval game adventure story with a distant outside conflict, but there was a lot more that the book could have delved into, but that's okay because the author gets to it in Heir Apparent!
This book had lackluster, 2D secondary characters that were generally forgettable (Giannine, the protagonist of Heir Apparent, is only in your periphery. Arvin/Harek, the protagonist of this story who is very annoying. He complains about everything and is kind of a jerk. His casual sexism is very irritating as well. Whenever he is annoyed at something a girl does, he ascribes the negative characteristic to ALL GIRLS. He does not do the same for boys he is annoyed with.
