Walter shurden biography

A conversation with Walter B. Shurden

In , Walter and Kay Shurden – longtime professors at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia – made a gift to the Baptist Joint Committee to establish an annual lecture series. A signature event of the BJC, the Walter B. and Kay W. Shurden Lectures on Religious Liberty and Separation of Church and State are still going strong more than a decade later.

On March , BJC General Counsel Holly Hollman will deliver the lectures, which will be at Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. A familiar voice in Report from the Capital, Hollman has been part of the BJC staff since , and she also serves as an adjunct professor of law at the Georgetown University Law Center.

We asked Dr. Walter Shurden, known to many as “Buddy,” to tell us more about the impetus that led to the lectures and how he and Kay feel about the series that bears their names.

What led you and Kay to establish this lecture series?
I walked out of my first course in church history at seminary almost 60 years ago convinced and certain that religious freedom is one of the basic human rights. Deny religious liberty and oppression prevails; refuse freedom of conscience

Across a ministry that now spans six decades, Walter Byron Shurden, Sr., has taught three generations of students, ministers, and laypersons in the art of church history and the Baptist heritage.

He has served at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; Carson-Newman College (now University) in Jefferson City, Tennessee; The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky; and Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.

In addition, Shurden has informed countless individuals, congregations, and the wider moderate Baptist movement in North America through a significant body of published works that includes books, articles, lectureships, and sermons.

Both in terms of its scope and influence, the teaching ministry of Walter B. Shurden, Sr., has been as substantive as any other Baptist historian of the past half century.

Shurden's own educational pilgrimage took him from his hometown of Greenville, Mississippi, to Delta State University, and then to Mississippi College, where he majored in religion and graduated with
Fifteen years ago Walter B. Shurden, Executive Director of the Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer University, wrote a fine book titled The Baptist Identity: Four Fragile Freedoms(Macon, GA: Smyth & Helwys, ). In his introduction, Shurden wrote:

What are the generic "distinctives," the peculiar "convictions," the specific "ideals" that Baptists rally around and that make a Baptist a Baptist? What is the shape and feel of Baptist Christianity?

Winthrop Hudson, one of Baptists' best historians and keenest twentieth century interpreters, noted correctly that pioneer Baptists of seventeenth century England did not set out to identify "Baptist distinctives." Their concern was instead to be "faithful and obedient Christians" [and] their primary approach was to derive general theological principles from their serious a
