The son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Obama grew up in Hawaii. Leaving the state to attend college, he earned degrees from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, where he met and married Michelle LaVaughn Robinson in Their two daughters, Malia Ann and Natasha (Sasha), were born in and , respectively. Obama was elected to the Illinois state senate in and served there for eight years. In , he was elected by a record majority to the US Senate from Illinois and, in February , announced his candidacy for president. After winning a closely fought contest against New York Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination, Obama handily defeated Senator John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee for president, in the general election.

When Barack was 6 years old, his mother moved him to Indonesia where she worked as an English teacher. They were surrounded by the poor, and they had no stable electricity.
At the age of 10, Barack's mother sent him back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. He attended a prep school, and he was the only black child there.
Barack attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, but later moved to Columbia University in New York.
With a heart for the poor, Barack took a position in Chicago that allowed him to participate in school reform, city cleanup, and other activities.
Barack decided to go to law school, so he attended Harvard. He paid for his education with student loans.
Barack Obama became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.

Dr. Zilda Arns Neumann was the founder and president of Pastoral da Criança, a Brazilian Catholic child development and family support organization. She was also the founder and national coordinator of the Senior Citizens’ Pastoral of the National Bishops’ Conference of Brazil and served as a member of the country's National Health Council and National Council for Social and Economic Development. For her work on social issues, Neumann received numerous awards, including the Woodrow Wilson Award, Opus Award, Public Health Heroine of the Americas Award, Brazilian Person of the Year on Work for Children’s Health, and the Lions Club International Humanitarian Prize. She died in the January Haiti earthquake.

Criada em uma família numerosa, Zilda era a caçula de 13 irmãos. Sua família veio do oeste da Alemanha e chegou ao Brasil no século 19, desembarcando no porto onde hoje fica Florianópolis (SC). Mais tarde, os Arns se instalaram na cidade de Forquilhinha, município catarinense que ajudaram a construir ao lado de outras famílias de imigrantes, nas cercanias de Cricíuma.
Fervorosamente católica, segundo um balanço feito em , a cidade tinha proporções de bispos, padres e irmãs de caridade semelhantes ao Vaticano. Na casa de Zilda, não era diferente. Cinco de seus irmãos dedicaram a vida à Igreja, caminho que poderia ter sido trilhado pela pediatra se seu interesse pela medicina não tivesse brotado durante a juventude.
