The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Dieter Dengler (NSN: /), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism during an extremely daring escape from a Prisoner of War stockade in Laos, on 30 June Playing a key role in planning, preparing for, and developing an escape and evasion operation involving several fellow prisoners and himself, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Dengler, keenly aware of the hazardous nature of the escape attempt, boldly initiated the operation and contributed in large measure to its success. When an unplanned situation developed while the escape operation was being executed, he reacted with the highest degree of valor and gallantry. Through his courageous and inspiring fighting spirit, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Dengler upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (At the time of his capture, Dieter Dengler was assigned to Attack Squadron (VA), attached to the U.S.S. RANGER.)

Dieter Dengler was born in in Wildberg, Germany, a small town in the Black Forest region. His father died during World War II, and his grandfather, who had refused to support the Nazis, faced persecution as a result. From a young age, Dengler had a fascination with airplanes, often watching the Allied planes fly overhead during the war. He was determined to become a pilot at all costs, but he had to set his dreams aside temporarily to support his family. He worked as a blacksmith and watchmaker to make ends meet.

Born in Germany, Dieter Dengler was a U.S. Naval Aviator who was shot down over Laos and captured during the Vietnam War. After six months of torture, imprisonment, and 23 days on the run, he became only the second captured US airman to escape during the war. But Dengler was on the move his entire life.
Early Life in Germany
Life started for Dengler in a small village in Germany's Black Forest region. Dieter Dengler's parents were Ernst Dieter Dengler and Barbara Wagner. His father, Ernest, a bookbinder by trade, was drafted into the German Wehrmacht in which was the unified armed forces of Nazi Germany. Little is known of his death in combat operations between Germany and the Soviet Union in the Balkans.
