Summary of Utagawa Hiroshige
Utagawa Hiroshige is known as the last great master in Japanese traditional woodblock printing, imbuing the Japanese landscape with a lyricism that drew upon the fleeting nature of sensual pleasure. Hiroshige's prints memorialized everyday life in the late Edo period, in which travel and entertainment became more widely available to the middle-class, and presented a vision of the country in which the changing of the seasons, and the associated festivities, were central. This vision of Japan, heightened by Hiroshige's lush colors and unconventional approach to composition, had widespread appeal within Japan and abroad, with European artists adopting both his bright colors and his themes, transposing his interest in the ephemeral into other settings.
Accomplishments
- While Hiroshige was very prolific and made prints on a range of subjects, it is his landscapes, particularly those of his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, that had the most impact. Hiroshige interpreted famous sites through the lens of everyday experience, rather than literary, historical or imperial significance, giving his prints a mass appeal and allowing the Japanese publ

Woodblock print (nishiki-e); ink and color on paper]
Considered one of the last great ukiyo-e (a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries)artists, Utagawa Hiroshige had a prolific life and career in the Edo period. He was born in in Edo (now Tokyo) and had multiple names throughout his life which included Jūemon, Tokubē, and Tetsuzō. There is little known about his personal life, but of what is known is surrounded by tragedy with the death of his older sister when his was three, his mother's death when he was 11, and his father's death several months later (Ingram). After being rejected by Toyokuni, an artist that he revered, he became an apprentice in of Utagawa Toyohiro, whose specialty was prints of kabuki actors.
In , he married his first wife Okabe Yuaemon, a daughter of a fireman, and had their first son, Nakajirō, the same year. He had inherited the position of fireman, but quickly passed it on to his son Nakajirō in This was an unusually early retirement from the civil service and his reasons remain unclear, though expert
Ando Hiroshige
The Japanese painter and printmaker Ando Hiroshige () is considered one of the six great masters of the Ukiyo-e school. He is most famous for his landscape prints, which render typically Japanese landscapes in their different moods in a very poetic manner.
Working during the closing decades of the Edo period, Hiroshige represents the last flowering of the Ukiyo-e school. After his death, the designs of the prints became ever more vulgar, the printing careless, and the colors garish. In fact, a few years before Hiroshige's death, Commodore Perry arrived with his famous "black ships" to break Japan's centuries-old seclusion, and the end of traditional Japanese art and culture was in sight.
Hiroshige was the son of a fire brigade chief in Edo (modern Tokyo). At the age of 14, he became a pupil of Utagawa Toyohiro, a well-known printmaker, and he also studied traditional Japanese painting. Hiroshige's early work, which consisted of actor and courtesan prints, was neither original nor particularly distinguished, and it was only when he turned to landscapes, after Hokusai's great success with his Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, that Hiroshige found his own uniqu

First I want to tell you how I have become so much interested in Hiroshige as I am, in spite of the fact that I was not originally a student of the Ukiyoe prints. It was late in that I saw for the first time Hiroshige's pictures. They were nothing but a few sheets representing the Yedo Meisho and the Tokaido, which were, as I now understand, in poor condition and very badly printed. Yet, I received then such impressions as I had never experienced before. My impressions were twofold : Firstly I felt something tender and inspiring respect about the colours of the prints. Secondly I felt something characteristically Japanese about the scenes represented. Since then I have seen many pictures by the great artist and I have become more and more interested in them. And I who had formely not much interest in works of art have become a zealous student of Hiroshige. Having stated the way in which I have been led to study Hiroshige's pictures, let me now tell you what I have felt about his art.
One of the causes which have aroused my interest in Hiroshige's pictures is his attitude towards Nature. His real teacher was Nature herself. In the days before
