When Phyllis Hyman committed suicide in June of , she closed the book on a career that had long been deeply appreciated by connoisseurs of romantic jazz and rhythm-and-blues singing. A commanding physical presence and riveting stage performer, Hyman was a tragic figure beset by personal troubles. Never quite achieving the popularity that her prodigious talent seemed to justify, she nevertheless left behind a legacy of deeply felt recordings and unforgettable live performances.
Phyllis Hyman was born in Philadelphia, most likely on July 6, , and raised in Pittsburgh. (Some sources give the year as , but numerous press reports of her death mentioned that she had been ready to celebrate her forty-sixth birthday.) She was the oldest of seven brothers and sisters. An elementary school teacher noticed and nurtured her vocal talents, but she grew up poor and aimed at first toward a solid career as a legal secretary, attending the Robert Morris Business College.

Phyllis Linda Hyman was an American singer-songwriter and actress. She was best known for her singles from the late s through the early s including: You Know How to Love Me, Living All Alone, and Don’t Wanna Change the World. Hyman was born on July 6, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Philip Hyman, a World War II veteran and Louise Hyman, a waitress at a local night club, but raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Hyman was the eldest of seven children.
Her music training started when she received a music scholarship to attend Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh but she dropped out after one year there. She performed on a national tour with the group, New Direction. Later she joined All the People while working with another group, The Hondo Beat. She made her acting debut in in the film Lenny. Hyman also led a group called Phyllis Hyman and the P/H Factor.
Hyman’s debut solo album named Phyllis Hyman was released in on Buddah Records. When Arista Records bought Buddah Records, she transferred to the new label and released four albums: Somewhere in My Lifetime (), You Know How to Love Me (), Can’t We Fall in Love Again? (), and Goddess of Love ().

Hyman grew up poor in Philadelphia, the oldest of seven brothers and sisters and the third cousin of actor Earl Hyman. She was intent on a career as a legal secretary. After high school and attending Robert Morris Business College, she made her way to New York, now dreaming of a career in the entertainment business. , she formed her group, Phyllis Hyman and the PH Factor. One year later, she had become a fixture at Rust Brown’s and Mikell’s, two clubs on the Upper West Side of New York.
In , Norman Connors worked with her on his album, "You Are My Starship," which included Hyman singing "Betcha By Golly Wow." Arista Records signed her in ; she fit well with the company's direction of sophisticated vocals with a hint of jazz. Through the label, she affected the charts with "Somewhere in My Lifetime" and "You Know How to Love Me." Hyman married her manager, Larry Alexander, in the late s, but their personal and professional associations ended in divorce. This would haunt her for the rest of her life.
