It chronicles various pilgrimage sites such as Hinglaj, Katas Raj, Talka cave temple, Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir and Shivala Mandir situated in various parts of Pakistan.

The book highlights unreported aspects of harmony, and will act as a window for the people of India, feels Abbasi who will launch the book at India International Centre. As a researcher and author, Abbasi, along with the photographer Madiha Aijaz, took almost a year to traverse each province and their many crevices to explore antiquated sacred sites.

"The purpose of this book is multi-layered," Abbasi told IANS in an email interview.

"It seeks a journey towards pluralism, preservation of some of the most ancient places in history, tolerance and participation, empowerment of a community, which is facing a major onslaught of hardliner

Historic Temples in Pakistan : A Call to Conscience

Historic Temples in Pakistan: A Call to Conscience makes a case for keeping ancient emblems of faith alive and for pluralism in a land of irony that has been home to multiple ancient faiths, yet stands besieged by unpalatable extremism. It aspires to enshrine the ideal of liberty. By framing an all-inclusive piety, this book sets out to ignite a discourse and the collective conscience of a nation numbed into silence, fear or the false conviction of supremacy of a singular religion; to institutionalise the fundamental right of will. Elaborately embellished with evocative photography of antiquated and exquisite Hindu shrines, opulent rituals and festivals and regional populace, the chronicle has extensive research and exceptional pilgrimage sites—Hinglaj, Katas Raj, Kalka Cave Temple, Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir, Shivala Mandir, to name a few. While vivid introductions and sweeping images present the landscape and the social fabric of a territory, the redolence of celebrations spread passion and fervour. A special section introduces the extraordinary Fakira, last of the human hands behind idols in Pakistan. Human

It is no secret that dishonest scholarship is an important catalyst of faith-based bloodshed in Pakistan. Such works are known to snuff out entire peoples, geographies and eras to afford intellectual backing to exclusionist arguments. In such times, Reema Abbasi’s book, Historic Temples in Pakistan: A call to conscience reminds us that insisting on a wholly ‘Muslim’ history of Pakistan is both dangerously myopic and factually incorrect.

Through this book, Abbasi traces the cultural and artistic histories of some of the oldest Hindu, Jain and Sikh temples across Pakistan. Using her observations of rituals and architectures, she tacitly broaches the discourse of multi-faith existence which Pakistan’s national identity is in dire need of. Abbasi reminds us that the country has never been the exclusive custody of the people of any one faith but belongs to scores of men and women whose differences bequeath richness and fl

Pak temples are oldest symbols of our shared culture: Reema Abbasi

Author and journalist Reema Abbasi wrote the book ‘Historic Temples in Pakistan: A Call to Conscience’ last year in which she painstakingly documented the Hindu past of the Islamic country. She travelled all over the country and visited over 40 sites in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. In the city to participate in the Jaipur Literature Festival, Abbasi speaks to Urvashi Dev Rawal about the varied heritages of India and Pakistan, the recent Peshawar attacks and the need to strengthen Indo-Pak ties. Excerpts:

What prompted you to write about temples in Pakistan?

I have already written about the social and political issues as a journalist. I thought it was important to highlight this aspect of our culture, especially because minorities face challenges here. The book is a labour of love and conviction. I travelled for 16 months and did intense research on the subject. The temples are the oldest symbols of our shared culture and history and there is no movement that aims to erode our ancient heritage.

But Pakistan is seen as unsafe for minorities.

I think there is a gulf between how Pakista
