He was eleven years of age when the death of Louis VIII made him king, and nineteen when he married Marguerite of Provence by whom he had eleven children. The regency of Blanche of Castile () was marked by the victorious struggle of the Crown against Raymond VII in Languedoc, against Pierre Mauclerc in Brittany, against Philip Hurepel in the Ile de France, and by indecisive combats against Henry III of England. In this period of disturbances the queen was powerfully supported by the legate Frangipani. Accredited to Louis VIII by Honorius III as early as , Frangipani won over to the French cause the sympathies of Gregory IX, who was inclined to listen to Henry III, and through his intervention it was decreed that all the chapters of the dioceses should pay to Blanche of Castile tithes for the southern crusade. Born on April 25, at Poissy, Louis was the second son of King Louis VIII (r. –) and Blanche of Castile (–). Louis VIII died at the young age of thirty-eight, when Louis IX was only twelve years old. A child king had not ruled in France in more than a century. Since Louis was not of mature age, his mother ruled as regent until , when Louis turned twenty-one. He had married Marguerite de Provence the previous year, and their union produced eleven children (six boys and five girls).
Louis was a dutiful father who loved his children and considered it his greatest duty to teach them the Catholic Faith. When separated from his children due to the requirements of the realm, Louis wrote letters in which he passed on his fatherly and saintly advice. In a letter to his son Philip, Louis exhorted him to always remember that God should hold primacy of place in his life and warned him to stay free from the stain of mortal sin. Louis exhorted Philip to frequent the sacrament of confession and encouraged him to remain devoted to the pope and to support and defend the Church. When, in , Louis IX went to liberate the Holy Land, he embarked with his bride, Margaret of Provence, but he was taken prisoner. Once released and returned to his realm, he undertook great reforms, including in particular the interdict of the judicial duel (or trial by ordeal). He funded hospitals and monasteries and realized his great project: building the "Sainte-Chapelle" as a shrine of light and colored glass intended to accommodate the relics, especially the thorns of Christ’s crown, which he had acquired from from the Byzantine Emperor. To his sister, Blessed Isabel, he gave the lands of Longchamp to build the abbey for the Sisters of Saint Clare.
