Comadre a Comadre program in collaboration with EleValle, UNM Office of Division for Equity and Inclusion, Unidos Project, UNM ENLACE,  UNM Student Affairs, Hispanic Heritage Committee, is sponsoring a workshop series by Simón Silva, "Cultivate A Creative Mind: Nurturing 21st Century Skills," on May 2 and 3.

Simón Silva is a well-known artist — creativity crusader — author, and speaker. For more than 30 years, he has traveled the country to do presentations for educators, students, parents and business people and has clients and collectors from all over the world. He began his career as an illustrator and eventually moved on to fine art, writing and speaking.

• Creativity Crusader: Meet Author-Artist Simón Silva

  AC: What inspired this project?
  SS: I’ve always felt that the arts have been misunderstood and disrespected by society at large. I believe that most people feel that the arts are either a highly sophisticated form of learning or a fun distraction. I wanted to clear up what the arts offer and why they are the most important subject matter in the 21st century.

  AC: What’s the first site you look at when you open your computer in the morning?
  SS: NPR.

  AC: What do you do to detox from media and screens?
  SS: I read, I read a lot and try to engage in stimulating conversations.

  AC: What books are on your bedside table?
  SS: The Distracted Mind, Moby Dick, The Shallows, Bible, The Artist Way, A More Beautiful Question

  AC: If you could trade jobs for a day with anyone, who would it be?
  SS: Anthony Bourdain.

  AC: If you had superpowers, what would they be?
  SS: I would be able to eliminate the existence of evil and bad tattoos.

  AC: What is your prized possession?
  SS: My vintage jazz collection.

  AC: What is your happy place?
  SS: Starbucks, The Coffee Bean.

  Simón Silva was born in Mexicali, Mexico. He is the seventh of eleven children and grew up in the Imperial Valley near the Frontera. His family survived by working in the hot sun picking fruits and vegetables as migrant farm workers. Silva himself helped his family by also working in the fields from the early age of six until the age of twenty three. Simón describes his family as not having extra money for entertainment, which led him to began drawing. 

  Wanting a better life for himself away from the harsh conditions of working in the fields, Simon decided to go to college and got his Associate Arts degree from Imperial Valley College. He then followed that with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the distinguished Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. 

  Since then, Simón Silva has made a career out of painting, public speaking, and writing. His renowned artwork has appeared in several distinguished venues around the world. As a public speaker he has traveled extensively throughout the country doing his lecture/workshop called, “Creating Sustainable Equity Through the Arts” to professionals, educators, s
