Todd McFarlane Reveals the Secret Story Behind the Creation of Venom
Comic book artist and Venom co-creator Todd McFarlane shared a video today in which he detailed how the idea for the now-iconic character was brought about by his personal resentment for Spider-Man's iconic black costume.
McFarlane's disdain for Spider-Man's black costume is fairly well known, and he has been vocal about preferring the character's classic red and blue look. However, the story he tells on Instagram makes it clear just how badly he wanted Peter Parker to ditch the outfit. In the process of getting what he wanted, he also created Venom, the new character who would inherit the black costume look shortly after he began his run drawing Amazing Spider-Man.

"I came into the Spider-Man office after doing the Hulk and they wanted me to do Spider-Man," McFarlane explained. "But he was in this black costume. I didn't wanna draw this black costume. It meant nothing to me. I wanted to draw the red and blue So, they said, 'Todd, if you just come on at # we promise that maybe we can get rid of it.' And I go, 'Well let's ju
Todd McFarlane Reflects on How (& Why) He Created Venom
Ahead of Sony's Venom movie hitting theaters, and hopefully kicking off their Spider-Villain Universe, Todd McFarlane has looked back at what led to the creation of the now-iconic character. Venom debuted in , on the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man # The Venom symbiote has had many hosts over the years, but Eddie Brock has always been the most popular and enduring of them all. Originally conceived as a new nemesis for Spider-Man, Eddie Brock/Venom was eventually spun-off into his own series and evolved into more of an antihero.
One such series, Lethal Protector, will serve as a major inspiration for the upcoming film, which also stars Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot and Michelle Williams as Anne Weying. Though anticipation for the film was originally lukewarm at best, more recent trailers have won people over. Even Topher Grace, who was the first to bring the character to the big screen in Sam Raimi's ill-received Spider-Man 3, has high hopes for Tom Hardy's iteration. There's still no word on whether the film will indeed be R-rated, as fans hope, but director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), right down to the dial
Todd McFarlane Reveals Venom's Creation Was An Accident
Comic book creator Todd McFarlane has revealed that Venom’s creation was unintentional during his time working on Spider-Man. Like many iconic inventions, the symbiotic supervillain was an accident.
Now known as one of Spider-Man greatest foes, Venom has transcended the wall-crawling superhero, despite maintaining the spider emblem on his chest. Evolving past Peter Parker, Eddie Brock has become an antihero in mainstream comics. Before he was a phenomenon, Venom was conceived by David Michelinie and Todd MacFarlane in The Amazing Spider-Man # (). As an extension of Spider-Man’s black symbiotic suit, Venom’s real world backstory shares the connection.

In an interview with , co-creator Todd MacFarlane revealed that he first drew Venom as the black symbiote costume being worn on a different character. Originally instructed by Marvel to illustrate Spider-Man in a black costume, he felt reluctant to the pitch. During the interview, MacFarlane said:
“Venom was a complete accident. Marvel wanted me to draw Spider-Man in a black costume, but
Venom: The Last Danceundoubtedly marked the end of an era for Tom Hardy’s franchise, leaving fans with a sense of emptiness. Because, over the years audiences had grown attached to Eddie Brockand his chaotic yet oddly charming symbiote, making it difficult to say goodbye. But while casual moviegoers had embraced this version of Venom, there was a bit of disappointment among comic book fanatics.

For those who had followed Venom’s origins in Marvel Comics, the character on screen felt like a watered-down version of the monstrous, menacing force that made Spider-Man’s life a living hell. Even the legendary artist and co-creator of Venom, Todd McFarlanenoted that Sony’s version was a major deviation done to fit Hollywood’s obsession with making every anti-hero “likable.”
