WuShock is often listed among the nation’s strangest college mascots. And for good reason. Throughout history, Wu has gone through many documented awkward phases to reach today’s iteration. For those on the outside looking in, Wichita State’s “big, bad muscle-bound bundle of wheat” may not make much sense. A dive into Wu’s history can hopefully clear up misconceptions and bring you closer to Wichita State’s beloved mascot.

While today Wichita State University prides itself on being Kansas’ only urban-serving public institution, it has roots in the state’s robust agriculture industry. WSU began as Fairmount College, named after the neighborhood in Wichita where it was built. Back then Fairmount’s football players earned money for tuition and boarding by harvesting or “shocking” wheat. During the season, Fairmount manager R.J. Kirk came up with the name “Wheat Shockers” for the team to promote an upcoming game against the Chilocco Indians – a Native American school just across the Kansas-Oklahoma border. The name was later shortened to “Shockers.”

It wasn’t until that WuShock officially came to be. Junior Wilbur Elsea won a mascot design competition hosted by the Kappa P

WSU's main campus is now home to a larger-than-life sculpture of WuShock at the entrance plaza of the new Steve Clark YMCA and Student Wellness Center, thanks to Clark – a longtime Greater Wichita YMCA board member, volunteer and donor – for whom the area’s tenth YMCA branch location is named.

Local artist Wade Hampton and sculptor Connie Ematt worked with WSU Athletics and Clark create the bronze sculpture. A documentary about the creation of the sculpture won "Best Kansas Documentary Short" at the Tallgrass Film Festival.

Origin story

Wichita State University, formerly Fairmount College, received its first mascot name about the time it received its first football coach. Tradition has it that in , football manager and student R.J. Kirk needed a name for the team in order to advertise Fairmount's upcoming engagement with the Chilocco Indians. He came up with Wheatshockers.

At the time, many Fairmount football players earned tuition and board harvesting, or "shocking," wheat during the summer harvests, so the name seemed appropriat

A first-of-its-kind WuShock sculpture was unveiled and dedicated Sept. 15, at the entry plaza of the Steve Clark YMCA and Student Wellness Center.

The 8-foot bronze sculpture is the creation of local artist Wade Hampton, who worked with WSU Athletics and Clark to capture his vision in sketch form, and local artist Connie Ernatt, who transformed the drawing to the final bronze sculpture.

The sculpture embraces a vintage style of the mascot. After working through several miniature clay models, the team took the design to the Reverse Engineering Lab at National Institute for Aviation Research, where a 3D scan created a full-size computer model of the statue. GoCreate used the model to create a foam replica that Ernatt covered in clay to be bronzed.
