Gorden Tallis says NRL boss Dave Smith is the right man to get the game moving
Knowing the players' names is not the be all and end all.
I know previous bosses like Ken Arthurson, John Quayle and David Gallop knew everybody, but I don't need this guy to know names.
He just needs to know business.
I played under Wayne Bennett for many years and we'd sit in team meetings and every month this legend of the game would get a name wrong.
A bloke like Paul Harragon, "The Chief", Wayne used to call him Paul Harrington. He'd call Andrew Johns, Chris Johns.
The most famous coach our game ever had, Jack Gibson, called Brad Fittler "Freddie" because he had forgotten his name and it stuck.
Another guy I hold in really high regard and played with over my career didn't know the names of four guys walking towards us as we checked in to the Australian team hotel.
This wasn't his first Test match, he had played several times for the Kangaroos and didn't know them.
He was about to play Test footy with
Dave Smith has quit as NRL chief executive, ending a tumultuous three-year reign.
Smith said on Tuesday he would leave the job on November
ARLC Commission chairman John Grant takes over as interim CEO.
Smith has been a polarising figure in rugby league since taking over from longtime CEO David Gallop ahead of the season.
As a former banker he has been credited with improving rugby leagues finances.
However, he was constantly at odds with the clubs over the direction the game was taking and how the NRLs revenue was divided up.
Smiths exit was also being linked to a breakdown in negotiations over the NRLs lucrative broadcast rights.
In August, Smith came under fire for his handling of broadcast negotiations when he signed a new free-to-air TV deal with Channel Nine before an agreement was reached over the pay-TV rights.
He trumpeted a $ million five-year free-to-air-broadcast deal with Channel Nine for seasons that increased the games presence on the network to five games a week.
However, that deal was soon shadowed by the AFLs reported $billion deal with its free-to-air and Pay TV broadcast partners as News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch showed his di
Dear NRL Fans and Members
This morning we held our Annual General Meeting and we’re delighted to share with you our Annual Report.
In it you will find some information about what we thought were some of our major successes for the year, as well as some insight into how we have responded to some of the challenges we’ve faced.
We’re committed to greater transparency across the game and you will see from our financial section just how we manage the game’s income.
Through strong and professional management, we have been able to deliver a surplus of $ million for last year.
We’ve secured a great new broadcast deal and we’re delivering better results from our sponsorship, major game and merchandise activities.
All these funds are put back into the game, whether directly to the NRL Clubs and State Leagues, to the womens and juniors comps or it is invested for the future of the game.
The future is looking bright after an incredible 12 months for Rugby League in Australia.
On the field, the Kangaroos and Jillaroos both won their World Cups and we saw the Roosters take out one of the bes
Balmain Tigers in emergency talks with NRL to save their share of the Wests Tigers joint venture
The foundation club has just two weeks to find the $ million they borrowed from the NRL in or risk handing over the full NRL license to Western Suburbs.
In a last ditch bid to save their logo and identity, the Tigers have called in local legend and former Olympic champion Dawn Fraser to try to persuade billionaire developer Harry Triguboff to buy their half-share in the Wests Tigers and pay the money back to the NRL.
The Western Suburbs side of the merger was the de facto guarantor when Balmain borrowed the money from the NRL two years ago.
Under the lending agreement, the thriving Wests Ashfield club would take full control of the joint venture if the Tigers can’t raise the money by March 31 or sell their share within six months.
“We’re very understanding and sympathetic to their problems,” said Wests Ashfield CEO Simon Cook, “We were once kicked out of the competition ourselves so we know what it’s like.
“Whatever happens, the Wests Tigers
