All sciences fascinated Nay, especially mathematics and physics. Albert Einstein
had proven that space, time and matter were not fixed but variable quantities. There was now no longer a single, correct view of the world, but many possible points of view. In addition, Nay also wanted to depict spatial relationships, and in the process he discovered for himself the motif of the disc.
In the s, he created numerous images reminiscent of outer space from superimposed discs. Contrasts of dark-light or warm-cold colors set them optically in vibration. They seemed to swirl, dissolve, or push beyond the edges. Nay laid hatchings and pointed ovals over his circles and in /64 developed paintings in which huge eyes seem like magical signs. Three of these works were placed on the ceiling at "documenta III" in Kassel in , sparking a major discussion about the general content of his works.

Ernst Wilhelm Nay studied under Karl Hofer at the Berlin Art Academy from until His first sources of inspiration resulted from his preoccupation with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Henri Matisse as well as Caspar David Friedrich and Nicolas Poussin. Nay's still lifes, portraits and landscapes were widely acclaimed. In Nay received a nine-months' study bursary to the Villa Massimo in Rome, where he began to paint in the abstract Surrealist manner. On the recommendation of the L&#;beck museum director, C.G. Heise, Nay was given a work grant financed by Edvard Munch, which enabled Nay to spend time in Norway and on the Lofoten Islands in The "Fischer- und Lofotenbilder" represented a first pinnacle of achievement. That same year, however, two of his works were shown in the notorious exhibition of "Degenerate art" and Nay was forbidden to exhibit any longer. He wasn't even allowed to paint nor buy ready made colours.

Ernst Wilhelm Nay (* Juni in Berlin; † 8. April in K&#;ln) war ein deutscher Maler und Grafiker der klassischen Moderne. Er ist einer der bedeutendsten Maler der deutschen Nachkriegszeit.
Nay entstammte einer Berliner Beamtenfamilie. Der Vater fiel in Belgien. Seine humanistischen Schulausbildung schloss er mit dem Abitur an der Landesschule Pforta ab. Anschlie&#;end begann Nay eine Buchhandelslehre, die er nach einem Jahr abbrach. Danach schlug er sich mit Gelegenheitsjobs durch und begann als Autodidakt mit der Malerei. Mit drei Bildern stellte er sich bei Karl Hofer vor und wurde von diesem im folgenden Jahr als Stipendiat in seine Malklasse an der Hochschule f&#;r bildende K&#;nste in Berlin aufgenommen.
