Gangadhar Meher was a renowned Oriya poet, who was fondly called Swabhab Kavi and often referred to as literary Midas who changed every piece of word to wonderful work. He was poor in wealth and education, yet rich in his literary works and contributions. His words were noted for its simplicity and innocence. In , Sambalpur College in Sambalpur was renamed as Gangadhar Meher College in his honour. In , Gangadhar Meher National Award for Poetry was started to award for literary pieces annually. Meher’s first poetic work was “Rasa-Ratnakara”.
He was born on 9 August in Barpali, Bargarh, Odisha. His father was an Ayurvedic doctor besides his family profession of weaving. As he was not able to meet family’s expenses, he opened a small village school. Gangadhar studied up to Middle Vernacular Standard. His intensive desire to read dragged him to a world of words where he started writing. He happened to hear Oriya Ramayan composed by Balaram Das in his early childhood which influenced him a lot. Gangadhar Meher was born on August 9, , at Barpali in the Sambalpur district of Orissa. He is also known as the 'Kalidas' of Oriya literature. He, like Kabir, was born in a Julaha family. At the age of 6, he was admitted into the village school. But unfortunately, he had to leave the school when he was in class five. Yet his interest in reading and writing did not diminish.
In , he started working as Amin' in the office of Barpali Zamindar at the salary of Rs. 7 per month. But he had to leave this job very soon because his employer wanted to use him as a false witness. After some time Zamindar realised his mistake and again forwarded his name for the court Muhavir to the government. He worked on this post till
