Who Was Molly Brown?

Molly Brown was an American human-rights activist, philanthropist and actress who survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Brown and her husband moved to Denver, Colorado, after achieving great prosperity through the discovery of gold at one of his mines in While traveling in Europe, Brown got word that her grandson was ill, and subsequently booked a trip back to the United States on the RMS Titanic, famously surviving the ship's sinking. She later took up a number of activist causes, including women's suffrage and workers' rights, and also worked as an actress. She died on October 26, in New York City.

Brown's early years were relatively quiet; she grew up in an Irish-Catholic family with several siblings

About Us

The Molly Brown House Museum stands as an enduring symbol of the turn of the 20th century in Denver. In the s, the lucky few who made millions in the mountains, the railroads, or trade moved to the prestigious Capitol Hill neighborhood. This included Isaac and Mary Large who made their fortune in silver mining and built the house at Pennsylvania Avenue. They commissioned the well-known architect William Lang who combined the styles of Classic Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque to create a unique and eclectic home. The home contained all the modern technology of the day including electricity, indoor plumbing, heat, and telephone.

Shortly after its completion, the Larges became victims of the silver market crash. They sold their home to James Joseph “J.J.” and Margaret Brown in Over the next thirty years the Browns made changes to the house including the front porch, back porch, roof, and third , J.J. transferred the title of the house into Margaret’s name. When Margaret was traveling she would often rent the house to wealthy families. In , while the Browns were on a world trip, the home became the Governor’s mansion for James Orman and his family. Molly Brown — Hotel Colorado&#;s Most Unsinkable Guest

In , the RMS Titanic sank with over 3, people on board after striking an iceberg. One of them was Margaret Tobin Brown, better known as Molly. At first, Brown helped others to board the lifeboats, but was finally persuaded to board Lifeboat No. 6 herself.

Brown continued to assist in the evacuation of the ship herself, taking an oar and urging the lifeboat to go back and save more people. Quartermaster Robert Hitchens, the crewman in charge of the lifeboat, refused, expressing concern that the suction of the sinking ship or the attempts of panicked passengers to board would overturn the lifeboat.

Brown, a strong-willed woman, threatened to throw Hitchens overboard if he didn’t turn around. Sources vary as to whether the lifeboat went back or not, but Brown’s legacy was cemented in the history books.
