Reagan: The Life

From the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, bestselling historian, and author of Our First Civil Warand "the rare academic historian who can write like a bestselling novelist" (USA Today)—comes an irresistible portrait of an underestimated politician whose pragmatic leadership and steadfast vision transformed the nation.

In his magisterial new biography, H. W. Brands brilliantly establishes Ronald Reagan as one of the two great presidents of the twentieth century, a true peer to Franklin Roosevelt. Reagan conveys with sweep and vigor how the confident force of Reagan’s personality and the unwavering nature of his beliefs enabled him to engineer a conservative revolution in American politics and play a crucial role in ending communism in the Soviet Union. Reagan shut down the age of liberalism, Brands shows, and ushered in the age of Reagan, whose defining principles are still powerfully felt today.

Employing archival sources not available to previous biographers and drawing on dozens of interviews with surviving members of Reagan’s administration, Brands has crafted a richly detailed and fascinating narrative of the presidential years. He

20th century. i thought about lyndon johnson. lyndon johnson was president who was central to the civil rights revolution that remade american society. he would have been a good choice except for two things. robert caro has pretty much stolen lyndon johnson from everybody else until he finishes. now, i. now, i think in fact that as soon as caro finishes there will be run for a one volume of lyndon johnson will have care of his kind of dominating the johnson market, and market, and i'm not going to step into. even if that weren't the case for my purposes johnson steps off the stage too soon leaving the white house in dies in there's still a quarter-century ago. i thought about richard nixon, and nixon command he carries the story a little farther forward.

    Tear Down This Man

Does the world need another book about Ronald Reagan? Since he left office in , there have been least a dozen attempts to capture Reagan’s life, philosophy, and popular appeal. The Reagan Library lists a hundred-odd memoirs by staffers, Cabinet members, reporters, and family members. They range from the conventional Washington-insider report (Lou Cannon’s Role of a Lifetime), the hagiographic (Craig Shirley’s The Search for Reagan), the eyewitness memoir (Peggy Noonan’s What I Saw at the Revolution), to the score-settling narrative (Patti, Michael, Ron, Maureen, and Nancy Reagan, respectively).

The most highly anticipated Reagan biography, Dutch, written by historian Edmund Morris with the full cooperation of the former president, was a colossal dud. When it finally emerged in , it surprised readers with its quirky narrative and its utter failure to capture anything meaningful to explain Reagan’s remarkable career or popularity. The New Yorker’s Hendrik Hertzberg called it “radically weird.” George Will trashed it as “dishonorable” and “an act of bad faith.”
