Meitner-Graf was a freelance photographer in Vienna, Austria until , when Hitler&#;s occupation forced her to seek asylum in London, United Kingdom. There she remained the rest of her life. During the war she managed the Fayer Studio, signing all her photographs with Fayer&#;s name. In the early s she opened her own studio.

Lotte Meitner-Graf earned her living taking photographs of famous personalities, and many such portraits were used on book and album jackets. But she did not limit her interest to people of fame or wealth. In addition to her portraits, her work also showed her fascination with the human hand and with details of everyday nature, such as dewdrops and dandelions.

Biography

Lotte Meitner-Graf was born into a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria) in She trained at the Graphische Lehr und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, Warsaw and Munich. In she married Walter Meitner and, two years later, opened her own portrait studio in Vienna, quickly gaining a considerable reputation. As a result of her frequent visits to Germany to visit her sister-in-law, celebrated nuclear physicist Lise Meitner, she gained introductions to many other eminent European scientists, whom she photographed in her own distinctive style, as well as other cultural figures including academics, artists and musicians.

In , she fled the Nazi regime, settling in London with her husband and son and became manager of the Fayer Studio in Mayfair, where she signed the prints with her own name. In she opened her own studio at 23 Old Bond Street, where her assistants included Anthony Crickmay, who observed: 'She had a very, very intense approach to her work which rubbed off on me'. When in the studio photographer Lotte Meitner-Graf died, her life’s work was largely unacknowledged. Alongside her personal commissions, she left a collection of portraits of salient political, scientific, and cultural figures of her time, a high proportion of whom were continental refugees such as herself. Her perspective, shared with other fellow Viennese immigrée photographers, was what became known as “a continental eye”. She lived her 74 years between her native Vienna and her place of exile, London. The Times published her only obituary (composed in either German or English), composed by her nephew, the nuclear scientist and fellow immigré, Professor Otto Frisch (–).

Frisch referred to it as an “Appreciation”. It opened with: “There can be few people who have not seen one of Lotte Meitner-Graf’s photographic portraits, either on a book jacket … or on a record sleeve or concert programme.” He goes on to list some of her numerous iconic images:
