I first met Muhtar Bakare in January , when I travelled to Lagos to ask if he would publish my manuscript of short stories. Before then, we’d exchanged a few emails, as he’d accepted one of my stories for the website of Farafina, the literary magazine he had founded. His emails were terse yet casual, while mine, as I read them now, were fussily formal. I was a year-old university dropout who was desperate to remake himself as a writer, and it was crucial to me that Bakare take me seriously.

Bakare is a man of many parts. He was born to parents of two ethnic groups, a Nupe mother and Yoruba father. He grew up in the Epetedo area of Lagos Island, known for its crumbling infrastructure and slum-like congestion, but now lives in Victoria Island, home to some of the country’s most prized real estate.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), Yewande Sadiku, was a guest on Arise Xchange, the weekly global business report of ARISE TV Networks on Thursday, 16 July where she shared her thoughts on how the coronavirus pandemic has affected Nigeria’s strategy in soliciting foreign investments and renewed focus in local investors focusing on stimulating local businesses.

Commenting on UNCTAD’s forecast which estimates that foreign direct investment flows will decrease by % in /, Sadiku explained that “as the pandemic worsens and economies further contract, our projection remains that those UNCTAD
figures will shrink even further”.

She added, “Investment announcements which we track and share daily through our newsletter show that $ billion investment announcements were recorded in the first half of – this is a third of what was recorded within the corresponding period last year”. Nevertheless, the biggest investments for new entrants from the half-year were recorded from Kaduna, Nasarawa and Ekiti states.

Yewande Sadiku (born 27 July ), popularly known as YTS, is an investment Banker and Nigerian Public Servant. She was appointed in September by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR as the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC),.[1] Nigeria’s foremost investment promotion agency. Before joining the public sector, Sadiku was Executive Director, overseeing Corporate and Investment Banking at Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC, a subsidiary of Standard Bank of South Africa, Africa’s biggest bank.
