Arthur Laurents is the author of musical plays such as West Side Story, Gypsy, Anyone Can Whistle, Do I Hear A Waltz?, Hallelujah Baby! ( Tony Award for Best Musical) and Nick & Nora; and the screenplays The Snake Pit, Rope, Caught, Anastasia, Bonjour Tristesse, The Way We Were, and The Turning Point (Golden Globe Award, Screenwriters Guild Award, Writers Guild of America Award, National Board of Review Best Picture Award). The last two screenplays were novels as well. His plays include Claudia Lazlo, Home of the Brave, The Time of the Cuckoo, A Clearing in the Woods, Invitation to the March, The Enclave, Scream, Two Lives, The Radical Mystique, My Good Name, and Jolson Sings Again.
He has also directed plays and musicals for the theatre, among them I Can Get it for You Wholesale, Invitation to a March, Anyone Can Whistle, The Enclave, The Madwoman of Central Park West, Birds of Paradise, three revivals of Gypsy (with Angela Lansbury in , with Tyne Daly in , with Patti LuPone in ) and La Cage Aux Folles ( Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical, Sydney Drama Critics Award for Directing).

In recent weeks, Mr. Laurents had finished work on a new play, and had concluded negotiations with a major studio for a new feature film version of Gypsy.
Mr. Laurents was fairly well established as a playwright — having scored critical plaudits with his Broadway debut, Home of the Brave, and a popular success with the Shirley Booth vehicle The Time of the Cuckoo — when he was asked, in quick succession, by Jerome Robbins to provide the librettos to two early efforts by Stephen Sondheim, who was then only recognized as a lyricist.
West Side Story placed him in collaboration not only with Sondheim, but Leonard Bernstein, on a show that would become a benchmark in mature musical theatre expression, not to mention a pinnacle in musical and choreographic achievement. It was Robbins who first approached Bernstein and Mr. Laurents about doing a modern musical version of Romeo and Juliet. Mr. Laurents and Bernstein, inspired by accounts of race riots in Los Angeles, later hatched the idea of making the story be about to rival youth gangs, one white, one Puerto Rican, in the New York City slums. Arthur Laurents was an American playwright, theater director, and screenwriter. He was born on July 14, , in Brooklyn, New York, the eldest of two children. His father was a lawyer, and his mother was a school teacher who gave up her career after marriage. Laurents attended Erasmus Hall High School and later studied at Cornell University.
Early Career
After college, Laurents began writing scripts for radio dramas. He then worked on educational films for the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return, he started writing for Broadway.
