Abstract
Idris Bidlisi's Heşt Behişt is a history of the Ottoman empire written in Persian at the beginning of the sixteenth century. Although considered one of the most important historical works of its time, the work remains to date unedited and scarcely studied. The present work aims to make at least a part of Heşt Behişt available to modern scholarship, with particular focus on the times of the author's patron, the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II (). The summarised translation (chapter Vll) of the eighth 'Book' of Heşt Behişt, devoted to Bayezid II's reign, provides the basis for further discussions on several issues relating to the period, including an investigation of the author's personal approach to his subject. The thesis begins with an outline of the historical background of the reign of Bayezid II (chapter I), followed by a brief account of the development of Ottoman historiography up to the appearance of Heşt Behişt (chapter II). The author, Idris Bidlisi, and Heşt Behişt itself are then introduced (chapters Ill and IV). Beyazit Han (Bayezid II) is the 8th sultan in the Ottoman dynasty. Born in (or ), his father was Mehmed II and mother Mukrime Hatun. When his father died in May , Beyazit Han ascended the throne in Istanbul as the oldest son of the deceased sultan. But at the same time Cem Sultan (Sehzade Cem), Bayezid's brother, claimed the throne in Bursa. Thus Bayezid called his army back from Otranto in Italy in order to fight his brother. Cem Sultan lost the struggle and he took refuge in Egypt first, then passed to Rhodes and then to France. He lived for 14 years in exile until his death in on the way to Italy, where he was buried. After 4 years from Cem Sultan's death, his corpse was brought back to the Ottoman lands in and buried next to his brother, Sehzade Mustafa, at Muradiye mosque in Bursa.

Sultan Bayezid was born in Dimetoka on 3rd December He was the son of Mehmet the Conqueror. His mother was Mukrime Hatun. Bayezid was a brave, religious and a calm man. His father Sultan Mehmet II was an admirer of science and he put great emphasis on his son's education. As all the sehzades of the Ottoman Empire, Bayezid was also very well educated by the famous scholars of the period. He was only seven when he was appointed as the Governor of Amasya a centre of culture and civilisation since The Seljuk Empire. This city was ideal for the education of an heir apperant. Sultan Bayezid II was a very religious man and very fond of literature. He invited many famous poets to the palace. He was so gracious that he always helped the poor. He had spoken Arabic and Persian fluently, afterwards, he learnt Cagatay and Uygur dialects. Besides theology, he studied philosophy and mathematics. He left the throne on 24th April and passed away one month later.
