Who Was Job in the Bible?
Job Was Righteous and a Gentile.
“In the land of Uz [modern day Saudi Arabia], there lived a man whose name was Job” (Job ). Job was not an Israelite. “His non-Israelite status explains the absence of many key theological elements in the book, including law, covenant, temple and reference to Yahweh,” according to the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible.
Other than being from Uz, the first thing the Bible tells us about Job is that he was righteous and godly, “blameless and upright,” a man who “feared God and shunned evil” (Job ). One might assume from these first two verses that Job was a simple man of humble means because it’s a rare person whose heart is fixed on God and also has everything this life has to offer. But Job was a very rich and great man by the world’s standards.
Job Was Wealthy.
He had 10 children, many servants, and his livestock numbered in the thousands. “He was the greatest man among all the people of the East” (Job ): great by man’s standards and by God’s. Incredible. We can surmise that every need Job had was met and every desire was fulfilled.

The Book of Job: A Biography
Interview: Mark Larrimore wrote ‘The Book of Job: A Biography’
Keeping company with Job, as friend or interpreter, is a worthy activity. Only the one who sees no challenge in Job or the questions his book is thought to raise should be dismissed. Recognizing that Job’s questions are not only “unfinished” in the book of job but “unfinishable”, we may conclude only that our obligation is to keep the retelling going in all its difficulty. This means learning to listen to every part of the text, and perhaps also to every serious past attempt to enter the argument—joining the long line of interventions that began with Elihu. Showing how or why this might be done has been the intention of this book.

5 Important Things to Know about the Story of Job
Too often in conversations about suffering, one particular Bible story is not consistently discussed. The Book of Job is a story that details the life of one man who was not a distinguished church figure facing persecution. He was an everyday man, albeit affluent in possessions and faith. The Bible describes Job’s financial stature as making him a noteworthy person in his region of the east. He had a large family of a wife, seven sons, and three daughters. In his possession were also large quantities of land and animals (Job ). Of all that he owned, his greatest asset was his faith.
“There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” (Job )
Job’s ability to believe was so impressive that he garnered the attention of God and also Satan. In this first chapter of Job, we read an account of God questioning Satan about his schemes. Satan confesses to roaming about the Earth, and God asks if the Devil has considered Job. The question sets Job up for an intense season of suffering, one that breaks him physically, emotionally, even spiritually, bu
