Any Human Heart: The Intimate Journals of Logan Mountstuart

William Boyd's latest novel, ANY HUMAN HEART, focuses on the life of Logan Mountstuart a writer, friend, lover and world traveler. His fascinating story is revealed through daily journal entries; his personal day-to-day writings relate his movements, thoughts and whereabouts.

The journals begin with Mountstuart's boyhood in Uruguay and then move to Oxford and the publication of his first book. We next travel with him to Paris where he rubs shoulders with the likes of Hemingway, Picasso and Joyce and Spain, where he covers its civil war.

During World War II, Mountstuart becomes a naval intelligence officer and befriends the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (though this eventually turns sour). Following the war, he goes to New York as an art dealer, to Africa as a literature professor, to London and finally to France, where he lives out the rest of his days. All the while, we watch him grow up through his musings and his rich life, which is characterized by friends, family, drugs, lovers, artists, booze, military men, fiends and foes, happiness and sadness, triumphs and personal tragedies. It is, journal entry after

I enjoyed this tremendously, even though I watched the TV adaptation a few weeks earlier, so I already knew the characters and plot (though there are some differences).

STRUCTURED AS MEMOIRS

This is presented as a compilation of journals kept by Logan Mountstuart from shortly before he left school in the s until just before his death aged Consequently, they describe things as they were at the time, with candour and an absence of hindsight. It also means there are gaps and changes of style. The pretence is carried further by the presence of footnotes (including "corrections" and even a reference to Boyd's own biography of an artist), an index and other later editorial notes, including Logan's introduction, in which he explains, "We keep a journal to entrap the collection of selves that forms us". I think it is the different voices of Logan at different times in his life that make the book work so well: often he is not very likeable, but he has a certain charm, and his triumphs are balanced by tragedy.

It is not a continuous narrative, but rather, broken down into journals covering significant periods in his life: school (establishing his key friend

Connection to me

The journal of Logan Montstuart showed the complicated web that is the life of a writer. The situations Logan experienced throughout his lifetime connects to me in more ways than one. From the novel I was able to see the dynamic and enticing life that writers lead. As a writer I want to be able to travel around the world and create a fictional reflection of the world and capture the diverse spectrum of life into a novel. Reading Any Human Heart gave me an idea of the importance of diversity in a writer&#;s life. The lack of diversity brings stagnancy to a writer&#;s work and that was evident when Logan was stationed on an island for a large amount of time during world war two.  Even though he lived in paradise, he could not create any type of writing besides his journal because the island was uneventful and it affected his inspiration. On the contrary, when he lived freely in oxford, England he was able to pen his most significant novel, The Mind&#;s Imaginings (TMI), because he was not succumbed to the pressures of drudgery that the everyday worker is faced with.
